At Shibley Day Camp we create magical experiences that promote personal growth and lifelong friendships in our nurturing, down to earth environment. Our Shibley community is guided by our GREEN values:

Generosity, Respect, Empathy, Endurance & Nurture.

Each day children from Long Island, Manhattan, Queens & Brooklyn gather together in a beautiful setting in Northern Nassau County that feels like the Adirondack woods. We provide healthy outdoor activities that keep children active.

Our program allows them to explore new and current interests, gain new skills and build confidence. Campers swim twice a day, including daily American Red Cross swim instruction in addition to participating in a balanced mix of athletics, arts, adventure and other special activities.

Junior Camp

Junior Camp consists of children entering nursery, pre-k, kindergarten and 1st grade after the summer. Our separate Junior Camp area and bunks are conveniently located near the junior pools, dining hall, bus pick up areas and health center. In addition to DAILY AMERICAN RED CROSS SWIM INSTRUCTION, campers participate in a variety of programs that are designed intentionally for young children and take place in scaled down activity areas built specifically for our smallest campers.

Our group leaders are experienced & nurturing early childhood teachers who supervise each group of campers at all times throughout the day. These group leaders are assisted by hand picked counselors who spend their days creating magical experiences and providing the care that young children need. It all begins the moment they step onto the bus each day, and continues until they are returned safely home to their family.

A trained bus counselor will be on the bus whenever campers are being transported. Shibley provides car seats as necessary and requires all buses to have seat belts and air conditioning. Campers can attend 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 weeks. A mini day program is available with transportation home at 2 pm for campers entering kindergarten and younger.

Throughout the year we hold events designed to make new campers comfortable at Shibley before they arrive for the first day of camp.

Events

Winter Indoor Fun Days

Fall Festival & Spring Fling

Junior Pool Party

Bus Rides & Play Day

Senior Camp

Senior Camp is for children entering 2nd-8th grades after the summer. These campers have a variety of scheduled activities with their group each day and plenty of “elective” periods where they can choose the activities that are most appealing to them. This also allows them to interact with children from other groups and make even more friends! Our heated pools are perfect for honing swim skills in the morning and splashing around with friends in the afternoon. Campers participate in shows, tournaments, various age appropriate activities and special events…every day at Shibley is different!

Senior Camp groups are led by energetic teachers prepared and excited to spend their summer days outside supervising and playing with the campers. In addition to the group leader, trained counselors are assigned to small groups of children to ensure a safe and fun experience. Activities include all types of athletics, arts and adventure programs. Campers can attend 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 weeks.

Throughout the year we hold events designed to make new campers comfortable at Shibley before they arrive for the first day of camp. Some of the events include Fall Festival, Spring Fling and winter socials.

CIT Program

Shibley’s Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program, previously called The Leadership Camper program, is for campers entering 9th & 10th grades. CITs who have successfully completed the program can apply to be Junior Counselors when entering 11th grade.

CITs will spend the majority of their day assisting with a camper group or in a specialty area. After a few weeks in one area, they will have the opportunity to rotate and train in a different area of camp. We give them a well-rounded, balanced education of working with children, along with the opportunity to work alongside different staff members. CITs will participate in activities and swim daily with their peers. A special evening activity for CITs only is held at camp during the summer as well.

Activities Teachers

We offer a balanced program filled with age appropriate activities and special events. Programs are intentionally designed to create positive interactions with peers, promote skill development and increase campers’ confidence.

Our youngest campers are exposed to all that Shibley has to offer including daily swim instruction, recreational swim, athletics, arts, adventure & more! As they grow and move up into senior camp we offer more individual choice in campers’ daily schedules. These elective periods promote interactions across genders and age levels.

Daily Swim Instruction & Recreational Swim

Shibley has four heated and filtered pools supervised by certified lifeguards, water safety instructors and additional staff. Our two junior pools are the perfect size for young campers to feel comfortable and safe while receiving their American Red Cross swim instruction each morning. Full day campers return to the pools in the afternoon for recreational swim.

Senior campers have age appropriate swim instruction and recreational swim in our two senior pools. They love “The Helix” and “The Turbo Twister,” our senior pool slides. These pools have deep ends that are perfect for diving and canon ball contests!

In addition to the pool staff, members of the camp leadership team are CPR, AED & First Aid certified and at least one registered nurse is always present when camp is in session.

Individual & Team Sports

Shibley has been a leader in day camp sports programming for many years. Junior campers play on scaled down courts and fields. They build athletic skills through fun games and activities led by physical education teachers and professional coaches/instructors. Throughout the summer they are exposed to soccer, softball, tennis, lacrosse, tae kwon do, zumba, volleyball, gaga, hockey, basketball & more.

Senior campers spend their summer competing in all the team and individual sports Shibley offers. They play each other in friendly matches, intramural games and competitive tournaments. Sportsmanship, fun and fundamental skills are the focus of these athletic activities. Campers learn to win and lose and how to appropriately show their emotions in each situation.

Creative Arts, Cooking & Science

Creativity pours out of our campers as they spend time in our wonderful art and science programs. New for Summer 2018 is cooking, which will take place in the recently restored kitchen at Attara, the original Shibley estate. Campers make their own masterpieces in arts and crafts and woodshop and show off their moves and imagination in dance and theatre. Senior campers have the option to perform in a Broadway musical. This production and The Solid Gold Dance Shows take place in our beautiful outdoor amphitheater.

Shibley’s music program includes instruments, singing, movement and games for nursery campers. Kindergarten and 1st grade campers participate in a unique program that combines music and science. Senior campers have elective science and music programs which include rocketry, nature projects and song writing.

Taking risks and initial struggles are important experiences that all children must work through to develop grit and resilience. These important traits increase the eventual joy and excitement felt when fears are overcome and new goals are attained.

When they are ready, even our youngest campers can jump and flip around on the air bungee, one of our most popular attractions for junior AND senior campers. Another favorite of our senior campers is the aerial adventure park between the trees. New for 2018 is a zip line off the aerial adventure park that flies campers across camp. A miniature adventure park in junior camp is another new addition for 2018.

These activities and our rock climbing wall provide opportunity for campers to take risks and work through initial failures which develops grit and resilience. These traits are recognized by youth development experts as essential to success in later endeavors like high pressure tryouts, going away to camp/college, future job performance and interviewing for employment.

Another unique feature of Shibley Day Camp is our NASCAR style go kart track up in senior camp. Junior campers “train” with motorized miniature jeeps and sports cars on their side of camp.

Meet Our Director

Heath Levine

Heath is a lifelong camper and experienced educator. He has been working at day camps on Long Island since 1995. He’s had an administrative role at camp since 2001 and became a full time camp professional in 2009 after teaching for 10 years. Heath has a Masters in Elementary Education from Long Island University and a degree in Chemistry from Union College.

Heath’s passion is for creating a camp program and culture where all children (and staff) take risks, explore interests, make friends and discover who they want to be. He is an active member of the American Camp Association as a standards visitor in the accreditation process of camps. Heath also regularly attends and participates in industry events and conferences in order to find ways to further improve the camp experience.

Heath met his wife Lauren while both working as day camp counselors and they have two beautiful daughters, Alexa and Sari who attend Shibley in the summer. He can be reached at heath@shibleydaycamp.com and loves talking to new families, current families, alumni, staff and ANYONE who wants to discuss camp (or Star Wars or Rock n’ Roll or the Mets).

Director introduction here...
Our Staff

We have GREEN values that guide our every decision at camp and lead to the development of campers who have their own strong values!

Generosity

We are givers.

We put others before ourselves. If we give all that we have to others, we will get back much, much more in return.

Respect

We will work hard to make personal connections with others and earn their respect. We will respect ourselves and the Shibley environment.

Empathy

We will share and feel the emotions of other members of our community. We will listen and show respect for alternate points of view even when we may disagree with them.

Endurance

We will exhaust every option and use every bit of energy to meet our goals.

Nurture

We will care for and nurture our community of diverse individuals. We are a family and will treat each member of our community as such.

We are searching for staff with these similar values who will serve as role models to our campers throughout the summer. Having strong values that are modeled by our staff leads to lifelong friendships and personal growth among campers AND staff! Working at camp offers an opportunity to have a positive impact on children’s lives. It also provides opportunities for staff to develop important skills identified as essential by future employers.

History

Shibley Day Camp began in a station wagon on the way to Jones Beach in the 1930’s. The driver was an ambitious young woman named Jeanne Shibley who had already made her name as one of Long Island’s best-known private dance and etiquette teachers. Her passengers were young pupils whose parents recognized Jeanne’s inventiveness and asked her to expand her program and keep the children entertained a little longer.

“Keep them a little longer” she did – first in a station wagon, then in her home, then on a magnificent Roslyn estate she purchased to accommodate her growing business. Other big land purchases followed until she had assembled the expansive acreage Shibley operates on today. At her side during this time of rapid expansion was the man she married in 1949, John C. Bell.

Toward the end of the 1950’s, a young physical education teacher named Harvey Kulchin came to work at Shibley as a Group Leader. Mr. Kulchin’s natural talent for creating dynamic athletic programs was just what the camp needed. He became Shibley’s Director at age 26 and, over the next half-century, virtually changed the direction of the camp. Under Harvey’s leadership, we became not only “The Day Camp with the North Woods Atmosphere,” but also “The Day Camping Leader in Sports Education.”

Along with Mr. Kulchin came generations of talented hand-picked personnel including Bill Brodsky, who gradually took over programming, adding his own innovations like our “Goose Cup” Hockey Championship along the way. Bill served as Camp Director from 2013-2015, joining Harvey’s son, Bob Kulchin who returned to Shibley as leadership staff in 1995 and now serves as director of administration and transportation.

After three generations in the Shibley Bell family, in fall 2015 Shibley Day Camp became a part of the CampGroup Family of Camps and experienced camp professional Rachel Lewis came in as director. CampGroup camps, each with a unique identity developed over decades, benefit from back office support and management so that camp directors can focus on what matters most – providing children with experiences that enrich their lives.

In 2016 Shibley veteran Randi Chase was added to the full time team as assistant director and our director Heath Levine was welcomed into the Shibley family in 2017. Stefanie Friedman joined the team in 2018 as Associate Director. Heath, Stefanie, Bob & Randi use their extensive education, knowledge and experience in camp and childhood development to direct all aspects of the camp experience. Together they are committed to preserving Shibley’s rich heritage and continuing the legacy for future generations.
