Debate Class for Kids: Arguing With Purpose! (Grade 4-5)
Debating is an important life skill. Good debates inspire youngsters to work in teams seamlessly and collaborate effectively for optimum results. Despite having opposing views, students learn to treat opponents with respect and understanding thereby enabling a perfect exchange of ideas.
In our interactive class, students will be introduced to debate. They will learn the debating skill advocating for themselves while remaining calm, friendly, and respectful. Students will enjoy this class because we will make public speaking both fun and interesting. Students will also have the opportunity to perfect their listening skills as they are encouraged to listen to and cheer on their friends. Therefore, in our fun and informative ongoing class, students will learn how to make persuasive arguments and practice presenting them. We will pick a topic and practice crafting arguments around it. Students will learn to remain calm under pressure, utilize facts and evidence, use logic to anticipate rebuttals, and concede points when necessary. This class is ideal for anyone interested in pursuing a career in law, or with an interest in debate.
Public Speaking and Debate (G6-8)
People fear public speaking more than anything else in this world- that's probably because they haven't taken this course! This class provides students with a compelling set of presentation skills, both vocal and physical, that they're able to put to use in the second part of the course: Debate. Students will start this class by identifying the parts of an argument before creating their own. In order to do so, they'll need to spend time recognizing and producing effective evidence. All of this will be taught in conjunction with discussions on logic and how to respond to the opposing side.
High School Congressional Debate
Congressional Debate is a mock simulation that requires students to role-play U.S. Legislators. Students write their own topics, research, create speeches, and debate actual U.S. policies in this competitive activity. This 15-week course doesn't just prepare students for competition, it provides them with the skills to excel in the activity. The course will focus on establishing and advancing the following skills: Analyzing complex policies, effectively researching and constructing arguments, adapting and expanding speeches in a competitive space, perfecting physical and verbal delivery, and breaking down parliamentary procedure.
Ms. Brittany holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communication (public speaking), a Bachelor of Arts in Justice Studies, and a Post-Baccalaureate in Secondary Education. Starting as a speech and debate competitor in high school, she fell in love with public speaking and discourse. Now, with more than 15 years of experience, she serves as Curriculum Director for a speech and debate institute. In Congressional Debate, Ms. Britanny holds the NSDA National record for most competitors in a final round at the National Tournament. Her students have championed (1st place) at the following national tournaments: The New York City Invitational (NY), The Blue Key Tournament (Florida), The Arizona State University Invitational (Arizona), and The Tournament of Champions (Kentucky). In addition, her students have taken home Leadership Awards from The NSDA National Tournament (KS) and The Harvard National Tournament (MA), multiple years in a row. Runner-up accolades (second place) include The Yale Invitational (CT), The Harvard National Tournament (MA), THE NSDA National Tournament, The Barkley Forum (GA), and the University School Invitational (FL). At a local level, Ms. Britanny's students hold the longest-reigning state championship titles in Arizona. All of these accolades have transferred into the founding of her school's Model United Nations program- an activity virtually synonymous with Congressional Debate.
