AMC 8

According to the official introduction of AMC 8 test, the AMC 8 test is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills. The AMC 8 provides an opportunity for middle school students to develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers. Students apply classroom skills to unique problem-solving challenges in a low-stress and friendly environment.
Based on the above introduction, the material covered on the AMC 8 includes topics from a typical middle school mathematics curriculum. Possible topics include but are not limited to: counting and probability, estimation, proportional reasoning, elementary geometry including the Pythagorean Theorem, spatial visualization, everyday applications, and reading and interpreting graphs and tables. In addition some of the later questions may involve linear or quadratic functions and equations, coordinate geometry, and other topics traditionally covered in a beginning algebra course.
In this class, we will practice many AMC 8 problems along with the general concepts that are covered on the AMC 8 individually. Students who are studying Algebra 1 and Geometry will find this course very helpful.

AMC 10

We will cover Special Factorizations, Sequences and Series, Exponents/Radicals, System of Equations/ Absolute Value Equations, Percentages, Inequalities, and Algebra Word Problems.
We will focus on the fundamentals of algebra and apply them to the specific problem-solving that is necessary on the AMC 10. The key to success on the AMC 10 is to understand 9th and 10th-grade mathematics at a fundamental and a deep level and be able to apply those concepts to AMC-type situations. The more practice with AMC problems, the more the student will understand what is demanded of them on the AMC 10.

 

AMC 12 (G8-10)
This class is dedicated to having students build a strong foundation in mathematics so that they can compete in math contests successfully. The goal is to develop mathematical skills and problem-solving techniques by solving contest problems. Our focus is to build students’ ability to reason, ability to communicate their thinking, and error analysis abilities so that they can achieve perfect scores on their math assessments and contests.
We will develop many problem solving strategies in class, such as looking for pattern/sequences, drawing a diagram/Graphing a function, making organized lists/ combinations and permutations and so on. Questions may cover basic topics such as exponents, fractions, reciprocals, decimals, rates, ratios, percentage, angle, perimeter, area, circumference, basic roots, patterns, sequences, integers, triangles and right triangles, Pythagorean Theorem, Geometry, Statistics and Probability, and advanced topics such as Modular Arithmetic, Number Theory, 3D Geometry, Trig, Sets, Prove method and other fascinating topics.
Besides official AMC 12 contests, our class will help students to prepare for various math contests through building a strong conceptual foundation in mathematics and exposure to a wide variety of problems and problem-solving techniques.
In a typical class, students will be exposed to a variety of fun and challenging math problems, and have many opportunities to share their expertise with classmates who are also developing their mathematical creativity and foundation.

Activities Teachers

Teacher Guo has 5 years of experience in teaching high school level and middle school level mathematics courses (AMC series, Olympiad math). He is currently teaching high school in Chicago. After graduating from UC-Berkeley with a degree in Theoretical Mathematics, Mr. Guo has been teaching various high school math courses including Algebra, Geometry, Precalculus, Calculus, AMC series, AIME and SAT. He also leads his high school math team competing in the NSML (North Suburban Math League) and ICTM Regional and State Math Contests. Mr. Guo also competed in AMC-12, the AIME, ARML himself, and as a 4-year math team starter at New Trier for a top-5 math team. Students enjoy Mr. Guo’s sense of humor, laid-back style, and relational teaching style.

 

Dr. Dong obtained her PhD in mathematics from Binghamton University. She has been teaching mathematics and statistics for over ten years. She enjoys teaching math because students can discover and understand how math is around us from engineering to nature. When she teaches math, she provides the students with a variety of knowledge, help them achieve their goals and make sure every student reach their full potential. She received very positing feedback from her students: “Dr.Dong is great, always answers question in a timely manner, and cultivates a welcoming environment in the classroom.” “ I'm going to be a math teacher, and I love the way you taught, it was super effective for me, and made managing my course load super easy.)” “I think she did an amazing job explaining in detail concepts in problems.
