Level 1 ABRSM Music Theory Tutoring
Many people can read music, but few can explain why the music sounds the way it does. That is where an understanding of music theory comes in. Music theory is essential in making decisions on how to interpret the notes on the page. Understanding Music theory not only helps you be able to analyze and explain what is happening in a piece of music, but also make informed decisions on how to best interpret the music. By discovering patterns and structure of a piece, you are more equipped to discover the motives of the composer, and perform the piece more musically.
I loved studying music theory in college, and also enjoy teaching it to my students. For my lessons, I use the ABRSM system, and work through the level 1 workbook. We will cover concepts such as note duration, and pitches, and build upon that knowledge by examining scales, key signatures, and intervals. We will seek to gain mastery of these concepts, and if the circumstances allow, find examples of the concepts we are discussing in the student's lesson pieces. My goals in teaching music theory is to help students better understand the pieces they play or sing, to equip them to make more informed decisions on interpreting those pieces, and ultimately to allow them to become better musicians.
Note: I am currently only recruiting for students in ABRSM level 1. If you would like to have music theory lessons at a different ABRSM level, please note that in your message, and we can look into that possibility.
