Reading
Ever read a whole page, only to have no clue what it's about? Do you avoid reading for school, work, or pleasure? Do you sometimes have trouble making sense of different stances expressed in the news?
Improved reading comprehension can lead to better test scores, grades, job performance or even personal enrichment. It is also one of the foundational skills of test preparation. To get there I'll take these steps:
Writing
There are 4 basic elements of writing. That’s right, only 4!
To help you gain confidence as a writer, I'll demystify the basic rules of written English. Your results will be stronger essays, articles or works of fiction. Areas covered:

There can be a lot of pressure involved in figuring out what colleges expect from incoming freshman writers. On top of that, your application essay needs to be heartfelt and persuasive.
College Admissions
As a university professor, I'm able to guide you through these steps. Together we will decode what application committees expect you to write in response to their essay prompts. For example, often these prompts ask you to zone in on a moment in your life that illustrates what makes you special. There is always something worthwhile to explore about yourself in this sort of narrative, even if you feel as if you haven’t yet accomplished much.
I will help you identify your character traits that match up with your dream school's standards. Then we will zone in on describing a moment in your life when those traits shined through. Once you've completed your outlining and drafting, I will help you polish your grammar and punctuation, ensuring that you write in an active, engaging voice. I’m also happy to provide additional support in narrowing down your choices for a college. I will even help you complete the entire application.

For more than a decade, I've been developing my expertise as an English teacher and tutor, so that your English language arts skills can improve. It's an asset to become a thoughtful reader and a solid writer even if your career is unrelated to English. Plus, life is more interesting when we can make sense of all the media saturating our society. One of my greatest joys is to guide students from confusion or apathy to empowerment and enthusiasm. As we work together I hope to cultivate your love of reading and writing as I help you with essays, applications, workplace writing, test preparation, and more.
Here's more about me:
I’m a college English professor who began as an English Language Arts teacher in the New York City schools.
Trained by a nationwide tutoring service, I now do private tutoring in one-on-one or small group sessions.
I have a Bachelor of Arts in Literature and a Master of Arts in English, with extra coursework in adolescent psychology.
In addition to my background as an educator, I also have more than 10 years of experience working as a paralegal at a midtown Manhattan law firm.
This blend of academic and corporate skills makes me a more dynamic tutor. I'm just as comfortable instructing someone in junior high school as I am teaching an adult. I can teach everything from basic composition to upper level technical writing.
Reading and writing are a huge part of my life inside and outside the classroom. I'm always in the middle of reading a book, ideally a page turner, and I'm always engaged in a personal writing project, whether it's drafting lessons, writing poetry, or polishing the novel for which I'm seeking a literary agent.
I also enjoy yoga, cooking, crafting, gardening, karaoke, music, and movies. A lifelong learner, I enjoy discovering the world with my 13 year-old son. Whether we're exploring in Minecraft, watching documentaries, taking walks, or writing stories, we have a lot of fun!
Please contact me if these services sound appealing to you. I look forward to helping you advance in higher education!
