Math (Grade 6-College Level)
About Elia
The summer after high school, Elia headed off on a backpacking trip in the company of a few friends and a book of math problems, which he packed last minute. During the trip, the book’s margins became increasingly filled with scribbles and calculations as he and his friends puzzled over the ideas in the little book. Since then, Elia has tried to keep mathematics in his life as a special activity in which we share and discover ideas together. He graduated from the University of Chicago with a BS in mathematics and was awarded the Paul R. Cohen prize for achieving the one of the highest academic records in the field of mathematics in his class. Currently, he is completing a PhD in mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, relating some ideas in geometry to problems in quantum computing.
Teaching mathematics has been an important part of Elia’s life for at the last five years. Over the last three summers, he has worked at MathRoots, a mathematics camp for underrepresented high
school students, where he tries to explain abstracts concepts with examples from everyday life. He has also led one-on-one research projects with high school students as part of the MIT
PRIMES and RSI programs, and has tutored students in Calculus and Statistics. While respecting his students’ primary goals, his secret goal in teaching has always been to help his students see
the fun and creative aspect of any math problem. In his spare time, Elia volunteers in bike co-ops, tries to climb mountains (not always in the company a math book), and dances West Coast Swing.
