This 5-6 grade reading and writing class will foster the ability to read a class novel then craft an effective literary analysis essay! Literary analysis is a vital stage in the development of students’ critical thinking skills as it works on both reading and writing skills. Theme: Courage and Growth in the Face of Adversity Focus Questions: - How do children grow when they face war, family disruption, and physical or emotional challenges? - How can we understand empathy, courage, and inner resilience—and why are these qualities important to develop? This class will teach from annotating literature to writing complete literary analysis essays. Topics such as theme, irony, characterization, plot and conflict, symbolism, imagery, and more are discussed and explored using a variety of middle school-level literature. About the Instructor: Prof. R specializes in narrative and expository writing with an emphasis on critical reading. She has taught literature at multiple levels and counseled many students in timed writing proficiency exams, strategies and other writing assignments.
