Subjects:
Standardized Test Preparation: My approach to SAT/ACT/PSAT Tutoring has been refined through my extensive experiences working with students with varied strengths and weaknesses. I utilize a holistic approach which incorporates both content and test-taking strategy. My service involves developing concrete goals and expectations of students' score improvement, developing an individualized teaching strategy based on their current score distribution, and creating a unique studying and practice regiment.
School Subject Tutoring: I tutor elementary, middle, & high school students with an approach that involves developing improved test preparation practices, more effective note taking, strategic studying strategies from my time in university, as well as assignment assistance, course planning, career guidance, academic stress management, and strategic consideration of academics and extracurriculars for college applications.
College Admissions Counseling: College admissions counseling is incredibly valuable for packaging a dozen years of academic effort, extracurricular activities, and life experiences into a single, potentially life-changing college application. Working together towards this goal requires energy and investment to polish, mold, and perfect the story of a student's academic journey with the care and focus it deserves. My approach involves working deeply with mentees to envision, outline, and execute college essays, strategically decide on intended majors and colleges within larger universities, and to create a wise and balanced application roster.
Hello! My name is Johann, and I am a 2022 graduate from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Society. I have over 6 years of experience tutoring students in both my independent practice and teaching over 100 students in a professional academic organization. My students have been accepted to prestigious universities such as Stanford University and have earned perfect 1600 scores on their SAT and I’d love to offer you my services!
At the core of my tutoring is my teaching philosophy which asserts that the most crucial element to a student's sustainable success is not a special studying method, an academic center, or even a super smart tutor - it's self-motivation and a sense of Purpose in one's studies.
As a tutor and an academic mentor, I strive to share my knowledge with my students, produce great grades, and facilitate phenomenal results. But when compared to my peers, my edge is my ability to connect with my students and encourage them to find their own purpose, drive, and their own motivations for working hard. This is what creates organic results, a sustainable relationship to one's education, and genuine fulfillment. And as a tutor and mentor, I can accomplish this because I have been where my students have been and strive to point them to where they could go.
Credentials:
In addition to my 6+ years of experience as a private tutor as well as a professionally employed teacher at a learning academy with hundreds of concurrently enrolled students and my degree from Cornell University where I refined and elevated my mastery of subjects in math, science, and literature, I would love to share credentials from my high school career.
In high school, I received a 4.0 GPA and my standardized test scores included a 2370 (out of 2400) on my SAT and the National Merit Scholarship for scoring in the 99th percentile on the PSAT, perfect 800 scores on the SAT II in Math, Physics and Chemistry, and IB test scores and self-studied AP test results that resulted in being awarded both an IB diploma and an AP Scholar with Distinction award.
My extracurricular activities and accomplishments included being placed in the Top 20 students in New York on the National Chemistry Olympiad, the Gold Key Award in Persuasive Writing in the Scholastic Writing Awards, and being the Leader of Finance and Publications for a fundraiser for the South Africa Lily of the Valley organization which generated over $15,000 in funds for HIV-infected children.
