Are you a high school or middle school student passionate about current events and looking to make a difference? Want to add an impressive project to your college application? Here’s your chance! We’re inviting YOU to participate in a 6-week workshop to create your podcast for the Youth Media Challenge! This year’s project is all about researching and writing a script related to the upcoming elections, bringing awareness to a topic that matters to you.
In this workshop, you will:
- Identify an issue you care about and research it thoroughly.
- Write a personal story that connects to your topic, with a powerful call to action.
- Learn to declaim like a pro, mastering how to read your script with emphasis, tempo changes, and voice modulation.
- Edit your podcast using Soundtrap, adding sound effects and music to make your podcast stand out.
- But that’s not all! KQED will publish all podcasts online, so you’ll have the chance to share your voice with students across the country. Plus, NPR/KQED will feature the best podcasts on the radio!
By the end of this workshop, you’ll gain:
- Research and writing skills
- Public speaking and recording techniques
- The rare experience of getting your work published for a national audience!

Instructors: On this project, you will work with our world-class faculty, including a faculty from UC Berkeley and a former public speaking coach for the UC Davis team!
