English (K- 6th Grade)
Hi! My name is Gail. I have been teaching in various capacities for over twelve years. Though my bachelor’s degree is in science, I went into the field of education when I decided to homeschool my two children. I homeschooled for five years, and once my children entered public school, I became a substitute teacher. I taught nearly full-time as a substitute teacher for over eight years and tutored No Child Left Behind students during the summer. In 2021, I was asked to teach a combined 3rd-5th grade class for a group of homeschool parents and happily did this for one school year.
I am currently tutoring K-6th grade students online. My favorite subject to teach is reading with phonics because I see a significant need for it. Most of the students I currently tutor do not have a strong grasp of reading with phonics, which affects their ability to succeed in other subjects. I rely on personal and past teaching experience to help struggling readers. I have found that effectively teaching reading with phonics involves a lot of repetition, review, patience, and time. I see the most progress in students I tutor consistently—two to four times a week for 30-minute sessions. Since most of my students are younger, and some have learning difficulties, I do my best to accommodate them by giving two- or three-minute breaks partway through the sessions. I make sessions interesting and fun, and I love to play educational games tied to the lesson during the last ten minutes of the session.
Besides reading with phonics, I also work with older students in vocabulary, spelling, comprehension, language arts, and writing. I encourage parents to be active in the learning process. Reading to their child consistently, reviewing letter or sight-word flashcards, or completing any requested activities I send home are important parts of their child’s learning process.
I am sincerely looking forward to helping your child become a successful reader!
