Classic and Contemporary Literature (Reading and Writing for High School Students, Grades 9-12)
In Classic and Contemporary Literature, students will improve their writing and critical reading skills by studying principles of strong writing and by analyzing classic and contemporary works of literature. Students will be taught persuasive, narrative, and expository writing strategies, with a focus on how to write successful academic responses. Writing instruction will be individualized to help students reach their maximum potential in upper level English Language Arts classes (including future AP English classes). Lessons are designed with an emphasis on building writing skills through targeted instruction including how to improve sentence, paragraph, and essay structure. Specific reading and writing strategies will help prepare students for upcoming standardized testing (including the English Language Arts sections of the ACT test and SAT test). Students will continue to improve their analytical reading and writing skills through oral and written responses to the literature and through guided discussion questions. Students will write analytical essays, edit, and revise their work carefully; they will also incorporate lessons in writing, grammar and vocabulary. The course is designed to enrich, stimulate and challenge high school students.
