Intermediate Reading & Writing (Grades 6-9)
Intermediate Reading & Writing is designed to help students succeed in English Language Arts by building their reading and writing skills. For students who were enrolled in Advanced Foundations in Reading & Writing in Fall, 2024, this course will build on the skills learned last semester. Newcomers are welcome. Each class will involve reading and writing assignments selected to help students develop critical reading skills progressively. Students will practice writing strategies and close reading skills to improve their literary analysis and reading comprehension. Students will also develop their writing skills by focusing on organizational concepts, argument writing, grammar and mechanics, and vocabulary. All students will receive individualized writing instruction to help them maximize their improvement in English Language Arts. The class will also help students gain confidence in their writing through instruction and practice in writing composition, while learning how to analyze literary works and construct persuasive arguments. During the semester, students will study a range of short fiction, poetry, and non-fiction texts. The course is primarily designed to strengthen students in academic reading and writing. Grammar, writing mechanics, vocabulary acquisition, and reading comprehension strategies will be topics of specific instruction to help students master the skills they need for success in future standardized testing, including the SSAT. This course is suggested for students in grades 6-9.
