Sharpen Your Voice: NY Times Summer Reading Contest Coaching
The New York Times Summer Reading Contest invites students ages 13–19 to respond thoughtfully to current news articles each week—developing critical thinking, media literacy, and persuasive writing skills. In this course, students will learn how to craft compelling, insightful responses that stand out.
In this course, students will:

Weekly Assignments: One written response per week based on a selected NY Times article
Feedback: Detailed, individualized feedback between lessons to support revision and growth

Dr. Edward
With nearly three decades of teaching experience, Dr. Edward brings a deep passion for literature, writing, and the art of storytelling to every class he leads. He has taught both college and high school students, in classrooms and one-on-one settings, across four continents.
Dr. Edward’s favorite subjects to teach include Literature, Writing/Grammar, Creative Writing, and SAT Verbal Prep. He is also a seasoned coach for college essay writing and has served as an AP English Literature and Composition reader and scorer.
He believes that while learning should be challenging, it should also be enjoyable. His teaching philosophy centers on helping students find the books that engage them—because once a student is hooked by the right story, learning becomes a natural and powerful process. Whether breaking down literary context or unraveling grammar rules, Dr. Edward knows how to make material meaningful and accessible. He encourages students to personalize their writing and believes that everyone has a story worth telling—and he’s committed to helping them discover it.
Dr. Edward holds a Ph.D. in Theatrical History and Literature and has written and presented scholarly papers on topics ranging from History and Literature to Theatre and Film. His diverse career includes work as a journalist, published poet, and author of young adult books. Beyond the classroom, he has directed plays in the Pacific, conducted archaeological research in the Middle East, skippered sailboats on two seas, and even SCUBA dived on three continents.
