We offer exciting and engaging activities and events everyday including: Water Sports, Adventure Activities ,Traditional Sports, Community Service, Creative Arts
Our teen “tween” campers learn new skills, gain self confidence, make strong friendships and become members of our strong, value centered summer community. Things that make SMA Teen Camp unique are: Teen Focused Activities and Events ,Choose Your Own Activities Everyday, With Only 60 Campers It’s Easy to Be a First Time Camper, Adventures and Camping Overnights Out of Camp ,Campers increase self-confidence and independence
We also offer 3 “Special Option Programs” for campers who want to specialize on activities including: Horseback Riding, Mountain Biking, Wakeboarding and Waterskiing
As with many aspects of teenagers lives our camp is also a very social place and we work hard to model and encourage positive relationships, create community in an authentic way, stop cliques from developing, and take away many of the traditional pressures that teens feel in school.
The result is that campers feel a new found freedom to explore who they truly are while at the same time feeling like they have a new “home away from home” at Stone Mountain Adventures.
Facilities
The Farmhouse
Nestled in the mountains, the Farmhouse is the epicenter of camp and where the camp offices and bathrooms are located. The house is a historic structure, built 160 years ago from timber felled in the surrounding forests, and is the year-round home of Anne and Jud Millar. The Farmhouse is a warm and welcoming building that helps make campers feel at home at SMA.
Camper Cabins
Our cabins are rustic and comfortable, the perfect summer home while at SMA! We have six cabins that surround the Farmhouse, three for the girls and three for the boys. Cabins have bunk beds with enough room for 8-10 campers and a counselor. There is electricity in the cabins, and the bathrooms and showers are just a short walk away in the Farmhouse.
Kitchen and Dining Hall
Our cooking and dining facilities are located in a big, gray building we affectionately call “The Rhino.” With a large kitchen and veteran staff, it’s easy for us to serve home-cooked food that’s healthy and delicious! We offer seating inside The Rhino as well as picnic tables outside in the sunshine or shade.
Meals and Allergies
Serving great food to hungry campers has been a cornerstone of our camp since our founding in 1983. We eat in our dining hall, a building we call “The Rhino,” and because we’re a small camp our exceptional kitchen staff and veteran cook can focus on the quality of the food rather than the quantity. We have fresh, healthy food (often local!), including a delicious vegetarian option at each meal. We’re also extremely accommodating of special dietary needs and restrictions. All meals are served buffet-style, so eat as much as you’d like. Plus, if you sign up for the cooking activity, you can help prepare dinner!
Health
Our Med Room is located in The Rhino, and all of our staff members have training in first aid. It is our policy that all medications are kept safely and distributed by our camp staff at mealtimes or as needed. All minor medical issues are handled by our camp medical staff. We also have a camp doctor who makes house calls to Stone Mountain Adventures when necessary, and we are located eight miles from Blair Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania.
A Typical Day
.Rock Climbing
We love to rock climb at SMA! Whether you're a beginner or an expert, we have a climb around camp that's perfect for you. We even have real rocks on the camp property: Donation Rocks. They are the premier climbing destination in central PA, and literally right in our driveway!
If you have only climbed on an indoor climbing wall, you're in for a real treat once you experience the thrill of climbing on real rocks. If rock climbing is something you love or want to try, Stone Mountain Adventures is the camp for you!
Mountain Biking
Beautiful Amish farmlands. Emerald rolling hills. Shaded old railroad tracks winding along a cool river. Intense single-track bike trails. A world-class skills park. Experience them all from the bike seat as you whiz into SMA's incredible biking program!
Central Pennsylvania offers some of the best biking conditions in the Eastern United States. With the development of the Allegrippis trail by the International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA), this area has become quite a hotspot for mountain biking.
We also offer a biking program for campers who want to take advantage of our proximity to the Allegrippis Trail and ride almost every day. We call this the Mountain Bike Masters program.
Camping Overnights
We offer several Overnight Camping Trips per session for groups of 8-10 campers! Each overnight camping trip has a focus, including: Hiking or backpacking, Canoeing, Wakeboarding, Mountain biking, Rock climbing
Horseback Riding
We offer a complete riding program at our outdoor adventure teen summer camp. All aspects of horsemanship are covered, from learning to comfortably sit atop a horse to instruction for dressage. All campers will have the opportunity to ride during the summer. If you're serious about learning to ride or improving your skills, our Horsemasters program is just what you are looking for!
Wakeboarding and Water Skiing
Wakeboarding, water skiing, and kneeboarding are some of the most popular activities available at Stone Mountain Adventures! Whether an absolute beginner or a seasoned veteran, each camper can have fun, find a new challenge, and benefit from the lessons of our experienced instructors, who are there to help you every splash of the way.
In Stone Mountain Adventures’ Wakeboarding and Water Skiing Program, our goal is to provide quality wakeboard and waterski instruction to teens ages 12-16. Along with the instruction, learning to wakeboard or waterski instills responsibility, teaches safety, and builds character. Beginners and veterans alike will improve their skills and make some new friends along the way. It’ll be a great summer on the lake this year!
Sailing
Sailing is another hugely popular activity we offer each summer out on Raystown Lake. Our Sunfish sailboats are great for sailing around the bays of the lake, and our sailing instructors will help you every step of the way.
Being able to harness the power of the wind is an incredible and empowering experience. Raystown Lake is located in the mountains, which makes it a terrific spot for beginner and intermediate level sailing. Come and join us at our PA sailing camp as we glide across the water and let the wind fill our sails!
Stand-Up Paddle Boarding (SUPing)
The sport of Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUPing) has been exploding in popularity and is quickly becoming the watersport of choice for a growing number of teens. At its simplest, it involves a rider standing on a wide, flat board, using a single paddle for movement through the water. Not only does SUPing increase strength, balance, and coordination, teens love it because it’s a fun and exciting way to explore the water. At Stone Mountain Adventures, SUPing is offered in conjunction with our sailing activity at beautiful Raystown Lake!
White Water Rafting
Nothing compares to the exhilaration of powering through rapids, so once per session we launch our whole camp into the Class III rapids of the Lower Youghiogheny River (the “Yough” or “Yock”) for a seven-mile whitewater rollercoaster ride. In an all-day activity towards the end of each session, the whole camp makes the trip out to the Yough, which is a world-class intermediate whitewater river perfect for young teens and first-timers. After every stretch of white water there is a stretch of calm where we can regroup and prepare for the next rapid. Everyone wears helmets and life jackets for safety, and professional guides ensure a safe and exciting journey. Our guides even provide us with a hearty lunch halfway downriver, and some lucky days they even let us body surf “Swimmers’ Rapid,” a small, standing wave in the middle of the river. As one of the most exciting activities we do at SMA, whitewater rafting is an absolute highlight of camp that reaffirms the bonds everyone has made with each other and gets our hearts pumping!
Canoeing
Canoeing is a favorite camp activity on a hot summer day at SMA. Sometimes we take a slow, playful trip along a winding river and other times faster trips present opportunities for campers to command their crafts through small rapids. It all depends on the location of the trip, the height of the water, and the mood and skill level of the group of campers. With enthusiastic and experienced counselors giving instruction when needed, canoe trips at SMA are always full of hearty laughter and good times as we navigate our way downriver.
Camping Overnights
Several times per session we offer Canoeing overnights. During these trips campers will depart camp after lunch for the river, where they’ll put in with their canoes and spend the afternoon paddling down the river. We send a van ahead to a campground on the river, so all camping supplies will be safe from the water and waiting for the campers when they arrive. Darkness brings dinner, a campfire, s’mores, stories, and a well-deserved rest in a tent or out under the stars. In the morning, we’ll pack up our site and set off once more to finish our canoe journey before returning to camp for lunch with many stories to tell.
Fishing
We provide the fishing rods and the bait, while campers provide the courage to put the worm on the hook and the patience it takes to “catch the big one!” We offer fishing on many of the local rivers in central Pennsylvania. Many of these are tributaries of the Juniata River which flows into the Susquehanna and is part of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. We mainly fish for trout, bass, and catfish at SMA. A peaceful morning or afternoon spent with a rod in the water while cooling your feet in the river can be the perfect respite from other adventure activities at camp.
Tennis
This is a popular activity at SMA. We provide rackets and balls, while you supply the energy! We don’t have courts here at camp, but we utilize the courts at Juniata College, only eight miles away. Please note that we don’t offer formal tennis lessons but offer recreational tennis for everyone!
Soccer
There’s nothing better than a great game of soccer at Stone Mountain Adventures. Also known as the “World’s Game,” it’s extremely popular here at camp, where staff and campers play together and make each game exciting for everyone. Our international campers and staff especially bring a level of energy and passion that make every soccer game awesome!
Basketball
Whether it’s a friendly game of knockout at camp or a full-on game on the courts at Juniata College, basketball is fun for everyone! Please note that we don’t offer formal instruction in basketball, but if you need help with your jump shot or layup, our friendly staff members are there to help!
Ultimate Frisbee
Did you know that more frisbees are sold in the US each year than baseballs, footballs, basketballs, and soccer balls combined??? Frisbee is probably the most popular athletic activity at Stone Mountain Adventures, and for good reason! There are few things better in life than chasing down a flying frisbee, and even the dogs at camp try to sneak in a game from time to time.
Flag Football
Flag football at SMA is thrilling and safe. It’s also quite entertaining to teach to our international campers and staff! We bring the flags and the footballs and you bring the enthusiasm. We also mix up the rules from time to time, so you never know what to expect when you sign up for flag football at SMA!
Touch Rugby
While not a traditional American sport, rugby is an exciting game that combines skill and dexterity. All passes must go backwards while teams run the ball to advance it down the field. Our enthusiastic international counselors love to teach rugby almost as much as they love to play it!
Gaga
Gaga is one of our newest games at SMA, but one that’s become super popular! This game is sort of like dodgeball, except we play it on a homemade court and there aren’t any teams! You’re allowed to slap the ball with your hands, but if the ball touches you below the knees, you’re out! Let the fun begin!
Softball
Whether it’s a full game or a home-run derby, softball at SMA is always fun for everyone involved! We provide gloves, bats, helmets, and balls. Often our American campers enjoy teaching their international peers how to play!
Frisbee Golf
At SMA we have our very own nine-hole Frisbee Golf Course! Also known as Disc Golf, this sport is played using special frisbees (which we provide) and baskets, which act like the holes in regular golf. Each player attempts to throw the frisbee into the basket in as few throws as possible. Frisbee golf is also a great way to explore the woods and develop throwing skills! We also travel to other courses in the area including courses in State College, Altoona, and Juniata College!
Volleyball
Offered several times a week, volleyball is a hugely popular activity at SMA. We play at the nearby Greenwood Furnace and Whipple Dam state parks, where volleyball tournaments rage on morning and afternoon before ending with a sprint to the lake!
