CAMP PHILOSOPHY
Open to the new and different
Med-O-Lark seeks to supplement the home and school in providing children a fun, safe environment for social, mental and physical development. Med-O-Lark’s philosophy is that children thrive through individual choice and self-expression. Accordingly, Med-O-Lark’s elective structure and wide selection of activities allow campers the freedom to explore and grow through their experiences. Med-O-Lark’s accepting environment fosters a sense of inclusion, as well as a comfortable atmosphere where children can be creative.
Campers feel empowered to step outside of their comfort zones and discover more of themselves, all the while gaining confidence and self-esteem.
HEALTH & SAFETY
Med-O-Lark has a fully equipped health center located in the center of camp. At all times, it is staffed by at least two medical professionals; registered nurses and/or medical doctors. In addition, the Sheepscot Medical Center, a regional health care facility, is less than a ten minute drive while Maine General Medical Center in Augusta is 25 minutes away.
CABINS
Campers sleep on bunk beds inside cabins that are equipped with electricity, hot water showers, sinks and toilets. Clothing and personal items are stored in dressers. Significant investment in this area is continually made to ensure children are housed in clean, quality dwellings.
Camp Med-O-Lark is located in the bucolic town of Washington, Maine. A short drive east to the town of Camden takes visitors to one of Maine’s most picturesque communities and the mid-coastal Penobscot Bay region. The camp is 20 minutes west of the ocean and an hour north of Portland, Maine’s largest city. Augusta, Maine’s capital, is 25 minutes west of the camp.
OUR TYPICAL DAY
Unique among most summer camps, Med-O-Lark offers an all-elective program. Campers create their entire schedule! Campers choose five activities/workshops (from over fifty offerings) which last for two week blocks. Therefore, campers may choose to take ten different activities/workshops during each four week session. In a typical Med-O-Lark Day there are five activity periods as well as ample free-time. During free-time, the staff remain at their activity posts, enabling interested campers to sample any activity or workshop that is not a part of their chosen daily schedule. Once a week, campers enjoy a Trip Day and a Lazy Day. On Trip Days, campers choose from a host of activities outside of camp and are able to engage with Maine’s wonderful cultural and natural offerings including local beaches, regional arts festivals, scenic coastline ocean cruises and hikes in state parks.
On Lazy Days, campers can choose to sleep an extra hour, enjoy an extended day of free choice activities or simply take in all that Med-O-Lark’s waterfront has to offer. In general, no activities at Med-O-Lark are mandatory. Parents though can request that their children receive swim lessons, instrumental music lessons and individualized instruction in other specific areas.
