Camp JORI, on 75 pristine acres in Wakefield, Rhode Island, is a co-ed Jewish overnight and day camp for children in grades K-10. Our comprehensive program of sports, arts, adventure and special activities is enhanced by our Jewish and Israeli culture and our strong sense of “TACEO”- Taking Care of Each Other. Whether your child is a day camper, full season overnight camper, or is trying camp for the first time, we offer a wide variety of session options. Our Jump Into JORI weekend program is perfect for those who want to get a taste of overnight camp.

We offer programs to meet every childs need from our standard and most popular 4 and 3 week to session to our quick 2 week stint.

For those new campers that just want to give it a try, we offer jump into Jori weekend experience. For the younger campers that are not yet ready for the overnight experience, we offer a day camp option and the the older campers we have Leadership in training program with a trip to Israel

A Typical Day
Your day starts with flag raising and breakfast. You have three activity periods before lunch, then a rest period and three activity periods in the afternoon. There is an all camp swim every day! After flag lowering and dinner, you enjoy a free play time and then an evening activity.

In the morning, campers go to 3 assigned activities (like instructional swim) with their cabin).  In the afternoon, they have two interest periods.  They can choose anything they like at camp.  We offer many choices, and campers can always find something to get excited about!

Room
Our cabins are all set up so that each camper has a regular bed (no bunk beds) and space for a set of plastic drawers if they choose to bring.  We provide campers with shelving for their belongings.  All bunks have their own toilet stalls, shower stalls and sinks

Food
In addition to a breakfast that includes cereal and could include everything from pancakes to eggs, there are popular entrees at lunch and dinner such as pizza, grilled cheese, tacos, chicken dishes, and a great salad bar twice daily. Campers are also given 2 snacks a day.

Health
Camp JORI employs a full-time nurse who lives at camp and handles all health care issues for campers and staff throughout the summer. The nurse is assisted by a health assistant who is a certified medical assistant. Health care includes a daily Health Call and dispensing of daily medications. We have physicians on call only a short drive away. In case of emergency, we use South County Hospital in Wakefield, RI.

The Camp JORI Health Center is staffed 24 hours daily. While health care is available throughout the day, there is a regularly scheduled health call each day, a time when a camper will receive careful evaluation of a possible illness. If a camper or staff member is hurt or ill at other times during the day or evening, they may be brought to the health center.  If a child remains in the health center overnight, or requires a visit to the doctor, a parent will be called.

SECURITY

Camp JORI employs well-trained and screened security staff each summer, who patrols the area overnight. Everyone entering the camp must check in with the visitor center and receive clearance prior to entering the grounds.  Camp JORI requires background checks prior to their being hired.

Shabbat

Shabbat at JORI: Campers and staff enjoy a traditional Friday night Shabbat dinner complete with dancing and singing. Lively Shabbat services follow. Israeli dancing and an oneg Shabbat treat round out the evening. Saturdays are marked by late breakfasts in pajamas, swimming and a special event, often organized by our Israeli staff. Shabbat ends with a Havdalah campfire and ice cream delivered to the cabins!

Mission & Philosophy

The mission of Camp JORI is to provide a high quality camp opportunity that is accessible to all children.

Meet Our Directors

Kara Liberman and Alicia McGee  provide a dynamic leadership team with an organized and practical approach to camping.

Facility and Location

Camp JORI is located in Wakefield, RI. The camp has a beautiful campus close to beautiful beaches, parks and historical areas.

History

In 1909, the Jewish Orphanage of Rhode Island was established on the site of what is now The Miriam Hospital. To offer a summer of fun for the residents, a camp was built in Narragansett. When the Orphanage closed its doors, the camp as we know it today was established. In 2003 the camp moved to its current location in Wakefield on 72 pristine acres surrounded by Nature Conservancy protected land. The state-of-the art facility was built with the needs of contemporary families in mind. The pristine setting includes playing fields, a theater, a recreation hall, two swimming pools, and a 400 seat dining room overlooking 600 feet of waterfront on Worden’s Pond.

If the walls of Camp JORI could talk, they would tell the story of four generations of campers coming into our door as wide-eyed youngsters, enjoying fun-filled summers.  Many JORI campers continue become counselors, and some now serve on our Board of Directors. Camp JORI fosters a feeling of family and long-standing memories of good times.
