Camp Hawkeye is a small overnight camp for all Humans ages 7-17 with a strong commitment to creating a diverse community.  With 70 campers and 35 staff, Hawkeye is perfect for first time campers of any age!  Hawkeye includes campers and staff from a variety of social, ethnic, economic, religious, and geographic backgrounds as well as across the gender and self-identity spectrum.

Hawkeye is Different, with the feel of Family and the healthy experience of the outdoors, Camp Hawkeye uses the joy and fun of camp to break down social and cultural prejudices, misconceptions and barriers.  Camp Hawkeye is a private camp with a social justice mission focusing on the best parts of being a kid. Owners/Directors Jess and Garrett are committed to the community and look forward to joining you in the healthy development of your child.

The Hawkeye program is an intentional combination of regular and special programming.  It includes small group and individualized instruction in areas such as Swimming, Archery, and Woodworking in addition to all-camp, Big-Idea activities that last from one hour to all day. Hiking and waterfront are important parts of the program, and active positive participation in all activities is too! One of our central goals is to get your child involved instead of sitting on the sidelines. We have scheduled down times throughout the day to balance things out so campers don't feel rushed or over-scheduled.

Our special blend of regularly scheduled and special activities, flavored with trips, and finished with creative spontaneity, is a program recipe of which we are proud! No session is the same and all campers, regardless of which session they choose, get to sample our most popular activities. In each 7-day period, there are 4 "regular" activity days, a bunk day, an all-camp Special Activities day, and a trip/hiking day.

Room

The bunks are classic wooden cabins with screened windows and an open floor plan. Each one has its own unique character. Between 6-10 campers and 2 staff live in each bunk, sharing the space and building a cabin identity. Each cabin has a name with a story to go along; Meadowview, Brookside Lounge, JaDoon and Booger Hollow are just a few.

Cabins have electricity for lights, though we do not bring electronics to camp (no phones, video games, tablets, e-readers, or anything else you would plug into an outlet for power).  Everyone sleeps in bunk beds (counselors too!) and it's up to you whether you want a top or bottom bunk.

Food

What's the food like?  Short answer: it's great We serve healthy, kid-friendly meals.  We ensure there are plenty of fruits and vegetables available and we serve water, milk and juice (no soda).  We source local foods whenever possible and take great pride in the meals we serve.

FAMILY STYLE MEALS

We eat almost all of our meals family style in our spacious dining hall, unless we're eating around the campfire or on BBQ day (which we do buffet style, outside).  Family style means that food is brought to the table in serving dishes and shared out to everyone at the table like you might do at home for dinner. Staff head up each table, help serve out the food, and ensure that everyone is eating, involved and happy.

Health
We have a nurse on site 24/7 : Most of the staff are trained in first aid and cpr.

Other

Friends guaranteed! Close-knit cabin groups and helpful staff means it's easy to get settled into camp life. No cliques; just new friends to make and side hugs to be had (don't worry - we'll teach you). Maybe you already have too many friends...what?! You can't ever have too many friends! Shy? No problem, we can help. Difficulty meeting new people? We got you, don't worry.

CONNECTING THROUGH PLAY

Hawkeye is organized spontaneity, having fun trying new things, and having a little craziness. Intentionally silly situations, activities, and group programming brings campers and staff out of their comfort zone, eliminates self-consciousness, and supports individuality. Camp Hawkeye is somewhere that everyone is a little different, nobody is the same, and we are all friends. We encourage everyone to join in to the level they feel ready, and you'll be amazed over the course of the session how much more ready you'll be to join into a bit of (safe) shenanigans.

With 70 campers and 40 staff, Camp Hawkeye is perfect for first time campers of any age. Camp Hawkeye includes campers and staff from a variety of social, ethnic, economic, religious, and geographic backgrounds. Hawkeye is different ~ with the feel of family and the healthy experience of the outdoors, Camp Hawkeye uses the joy and fun of camp to break down social and cultural prejudices, misconceptions and barriers.

Mission & Philosophy
Camp Hawkeye cuts across these seemingly harmless boundaries and brings together kids who don't live near each other, attend the same schools, or belong to the same clubs.  We intentionally recruit campers and staff from a variety of backgrounds, family situations, self-identifying characteristics, religions, socioeconomic realities, and geographic locations, and we believe that our camp is all the better for it!  Our development is deeper, our understanding is better and our perspective is broader. That means our campers have a more well-rounded experience and build deeper relationships that last beyond the summer.

Meet Our Director
Garrett and Jess have been running camp for 16 years.

Originally from Arden, Delaware, Garrett was raised in Newton, Massachusetts. He grew up camping in Vermont and New Hampshire with his parents and brother. At camp as a boy, Garrett came to love the overnight experience and appreciate the community and relationships born from that environment. His continued commitment to the outdoors has brought him countless new experiences and friendships from which he draws to communicate, teach, and connect with children.

Jess grew up in Northern NJ with cornfields, forest, quarries, and backroads as her playground, Her parents were foster parents and from an early age Jess loved teaching and playing with the foster kids. Going to school to earn a business degree Jess always found ways to volunteer and enrich the lives of children in the community where she was. Meeting Garrett in the winter of 2005 and learning about camp she knew that is what she wanted to commit her life to.

Our Staff
Our Staff are reflective of our camper population. We intentional hire staff from multiple states, from outside the USA, from different backgrounds and family make ups. Many of our staff have matriculated through our leadership development program and are now giving back to the kids what they received.

Facility and Location
Hawkeye is located in South West New Hampshire; in Charlestown. It is just over 2 hours from Boston. Camp is 150 acres, we have 6 cabins for male campers and 6 cabins for female campers. The property has 17 miles of hiking trails, a low ropes course, a climbing tower and a wilderness camp where campers can experience being even more off grid than normal camp. We have a swimming pool and a gorgeous natural swimming area we lovingly call "Lily Pond."

History
Founded in 2005 by Garrett Colgan-Snyder, Camp Hawkeye is run by a small and dedicated staff led by Garrett and his wife Jess. Hawkeye is a different camp experience and an extremely close knit community. The intentionality of the community is built upon Garrett & Jess's love of camping and the outdoors and their fervent belief in the power of the camp experience. The power of camp is found in the magic of community and at Hawkeye, magic abounds.
